Touhou Project Spinoffs Seeing Western Release From NIS

NIS America announced that they’re bringing over 2 spinoffs from the hit Japanese Touhou Project doujin shmup series to the US & UK. Touhou: Double Focus and Touhou: Genso Wanderer will be hitting both regions in February of 2017. While there has been a rabid fanbase for ZUN’s bullet hell shooter series in the US for quite some time, NIS’ involvement marks the first time any of the titles will be released in the US officially.

Their first entry in the series, Touhou Genso Rondo: Bullet Ballet, was released in September for PS4.

Roguelike adventure in Gensokyo

Touhou: Genso Wanderer is a roguelike RPG in which players take control of the Hakurei Shrine Maiden Reimu to investigate strange incidents in the world of Gensokyo. Throughout the game you’ll meet different characters from the Touhou Project universe, discover loot, and test your mettle with your favorite Touhou girl. The title will be released on PS4 & PS Vita on February 7th in the United states, and February 10th in the UK.

An epic adventure within a picture book!

Touhou: Double Focus is a metroidvania style side-scroller that takes place within a picture book. In the title you control either Aya or Momiji and explore the expansive map to find your way home, discovering all sorts of secrets along the way. Swapping between both characters allows you to use their strengths in interesting ways and help you progress through the story. Fans of expansive, exploration focused side-scrollers are sure to love this title.

Get creating!

Touhou Project has been a huge force in the Japanese doujin scene for nearly 20 years, and we’re only just now seeing official releases here in the US. There is so much in terms of lore, music, fan creations, and even the official games out there to cover that it’s almost impossible to suggest where to even start! Highlighting the roots of this series and it’s expansive history is a really good way to connect with others who are trying to learn more about this phenomenal fan driven universe and build viewership around it.
